March's Book (Little Women) Review

July 19, 2017 0 Comments

Oh my goodness you guys, I am so, SO sorry that I didn't complete this book review back at the end of March! Well, Little Women was a fantastic book! It took me a little while to finish reading because of school, but I would say I finished it around mid April. I don't know about all of you, but I personally love books set in the 1800s. Jane Austen is one of my favorite authors, and so I am always looking for similar books. Little Women takes place in Northern America during the Civil War (at the beginning of the novel), but the war doesn't totally affect the story other than the fact that the girls' father is off fighting. The story revolves around four young girls living with their mother and follows their lives as they grow up, fall in love, start families, and just experience life. It was nicely written and didn't get boring at all. I can't decide whether I should write any spoilers because I have one complaint that I am still frustrated about, but I would give away the whole thing if I said it.... I don't think I'm going to, but if you think you have the same complaint comment below. I'll give you a hint: it has to do with Jo and her choices once she is grown up (actually just one choice that COMPLETELY threw me off). Anyway, if you've read Little Women and need to vent about this choice, I am here for you because I read the book like 3 months ago and I still am not over it. Other than this disappointing choice of Jo's (the second oldest sister), the book was a lovely read! 10 out of 10, I completely recommend.

Dream Travel Destination

March 10, 2017 0 Comments
Have you ever just sat there and imagined yourself flying away to a far away place for some relaxation and a little adventure? It happens to me all the time (especially in physics class), and I always dream about the same destination... Spain! I have never been to Europe, so of course I want to go to Paris, London, and Rome sooo badly, but lately I've been researching The Camino de Santiago, a super long pilgrimage across Spain that lands you at a beautiful Cathedral and takes you through ancient and historical towns. The trek actually begins in France, but basically you walk 500 miles over a period of about six weeks to get to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain.

Though it sounds really hard to do (I mean, who actually wants to walk 500 miles for fun..?), it would be a really great adventure where I would be able to get away from everyday life and just kind of cleanse myself. It also takes you through the most beautiful places along the way.

Spanish countryside is absolutely breathtaking. I hope to make this trek with my two sisters after I graduate from high school... but I'm not sure if it'll happen. I actually have a religion teacher at my school who made the pilgrimage a year or two ago, and her experience sounds amazing. You meet people from all over the world and get to try out all kinds of new things. It's also a good way to let go of stress and worries that you might have. I'll be sure to let you know if I actually go in two years!

What's your dream destination?
And if you've ever trekked the Camino, let me know how it went for you! I'd love to hear!

March's Book--Little Women

March 04, 2017 0 Comments

And the book of the month is..... Little Women!

I've actually never read this book, and though it probably would have been better if I had read it when I was younger, I still feel that it is a classic that I just have to read! If you've read it already, join me at the end of the month when I post some discussion questions and tell me what you thought of it in the comments. If you haven't read it yet, you're in the same boat as me, so let's get reading!

Have suggestions for the next month's book? Let me know in the comments!

Bookclub on the Blog!

March 04, 2017 1 Comments

Do you love reading, but can never find that perfect book? I have the same exact problem, but this year I am trying to expand my library. Well here on Pearl and Poppy I'm going to recommend a book at the beginning of each month, and at the end of the month, I'll post my interpretation of it and some discussion questions for the comments! I'll be choosing a mix of popular books to classics to random ones that I find in the local used bookstore. I'll give each book a review after I read it, and hopefully that'll inspire you to dust off those books that have been sitting on the shelf and give them a try, too!

I'll post the book for March later today!

Do you have any good book suggestions? Let me know and I'll give them a read!

Genius Oreo Brownies!

February 24, 2017 0 Comments
So today I was sitting at home doing nothing because for some reason I didn't have school. I could have done homework, but am I really going to do that on a Friday? No. I was getting pretty hungry, so I looked in my pantry and saw some Ghirardelli brownie mix! Then while I was looking for vegetable oil, I found a pack of Oreos and an idea struck me! OREO BROWNIES!! I'm probably not the first to come up with this idea, but either way I was convinced they would taste fantastic.
This is the brownie mix I used with just regular Oreos.
Ghirardelli brownies taste fantastic on their own, but who doesn't love a little extra something... especially if that something is Oreos! The first thing you have to do is preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Then make the brownie mix the way it tells you on the box. When you are ready to put the mix into an 8x8 inch pan, only pour half of it in or enough to just cover the bottom of the pan. Then set in full Oreos on top of the batter. I only put 9 Oreos so that there would be one in every brownie square. Cover the Oreos with the rest of the batter and put the pan in the oven for the amount of time it says on the box. I put mine in for 45 minutes.
This is how my brownies came out of the oven. You could just barely see the Oreos under the top of the crust. I cut the brownies into 9 squares about four minutes after I took them out of the oven and let them cool for another 20.
I could not even wait to try them, so I pulled one out while the rest were still pretty hot, and I LOVED it! You can see the little Oreo stripe in the brownie and it tasted like heaven. I was worried that something would go wrong when you actually bake the Oreo because I've never done that before. It worked though, and you guys totally need to try this recipe!
Even if the brownies would have come out gross, I still had so much fun baking them which is the most important part! So get your apron on and go make some Oreo brownies!

What's your favorite Oreo-based dessert?

Relaxation Time!

February 23, 2017 0 Comments
Guys, it's been a long week, and I think I really need a spa day... said me a couple days ago when I was literally so tired I could hardly walk. So what did I do? Got my favorite snacks, some bubble bath, and a few candles and turned my bathroom into a getaway spa.

Want to follow in my footsteps? Get on your most comfy bathrobe and twist your hair into a knot because this will be the most relaxing day you've had in a while.

Start out with the bath. Get a really nice bottle of bubblebath (or make your own using the recipe here like I did) because it will make the experience 10 times better. Or if you want to go the more scented, colorful route, get a bath bomb from Lush! Those are always super fun because they're fizzy and they have oils in them that make your skin feel super smooth.

Next, get your snacks. I decided to go with some substantial and healthy(ish) snacks, so I got my favorite cheese, some crackers, pistachios, grapes, and to add something sweet, some mini marshmallows. I paired this with a nice glass of grape juice (and no, it wasn't wine thank you very much) and soaked away while nibbling on crackers and cheese!

Add a candle, and this bath is ready to go. While you soak, maybe put on a face mask or do what I did and paint your nails! I set up my nail kit on the edge of my tub so that I could give myself a quick mani.

After my bath, I felt relaxed and ready to start my week. All my stress had gone down the drain!

What's your favorite way to relax?

Impromptu Ranch Photoshoot

February 22, 2017 0 Comments

Today on my way home from school, I decided to make a quick detour and check out the river on my ranch that has been flowing for the last two weeks. It flows right over the road and I thought it looked really pretty, especially with all the green grass.
Call me basic (I secretly am... maybe not that secretly but shh) but I felt the need to take a selfie just because this river literally NEVER flows. Then I though hey why not do a little photoshoot just because. So I set my phone up on a timer and got a few shots that I actually kind of liked!
This is the first one I took. I thought it looked nicely dramatic and very asymmetrical and artsy. And I am so in love with the green hills! The ranch only looks like this for a few weeks, and even though I love the classic golden hills of California, it's nice to feel like I'm in Ireland for a little while.
This is the next one I took that I liked. I took it a little up the hill from the river. The sun was going down, and so I really liked the lighting in the picture (even though you can't really see my face). I wish the quality was better, but I only had my phone in the car with me, not a better camera.

So yeah, anyway this is just another look into life on a ranch... not that I'm having photoshoots everyday haha, but I feel so lucky that I grew up here💕

If you've got any good photography suggestions, I could definitely use them ;)
Let me know in the comments!
